A flow-writing prompt: ‘Describe your work to a blind dentist’

The dentist – accustomed to using their hands and having great tools! I always imagined that a dentist has an advanced sense of touch – doubly so for a blind one [she writes with irony].

So this work has many small pieces. You have to touch them quite carefully. I’ll put your hand in the centre and you can move out from there. It’s on a shiny black glass surface, that you will feel later. The small pieces are made of two clays, one velvety and dark, the other fresh, strong and white. These are the small waves washing towards you.

Move your fingertips ever so gently over each piece – start in the centre and see if you can find a flow – a direction to go in. I want your words to tell me what you feel, where you go. That’s it. Move your fingertips. Be careful of the unpredictable waves. They are extra delicate. I miss them sometimes and I can see them. Go closer perhaps, but not too close.

Imagine a stream. You may be sitting beside, but preferably in…feeling the water move around you, under, over, carrying stems, leaves and seeds within. What do you feel? The fresh cool tropical water recently sprung from the earth.

Feel the leaves move around you, glancing past your skin. Some shine, their colour deepened, others dark and velvety, because sometimes that’s what the water does; tells the leaves that they will be carried and strengthened. Their journey begun.
