Black mid-fire clay, glaze, lustre

Earlier this year I decided to experiment. Much of my practice entails hours of often painstaking work, and while I’m most often drawn to these large mixed-media pieces, I wanted to see what happened over the short and unpredictable time and space ahead.

Hence my ‘Rising’ series. Themes of water, movement and fluidity are still plain to see, but it was fun to approach some free-standing pieces and see where they took me. I love the velvety black of this clay and the lustrous bubbles.

While my hands were working, my mind was deep in the ocean, where invisible currents push and pull and where sometimes fantastical, almost mythical creatures lurk. There is a darkness here, something I still can’t fathom, but know occasionally rises.
